Cockroaches & Asthma: How to Stay Healthy

Cockroaches & Asthma: How to Stay Healthy

You know what will put a BIG damper on someone’s day – a roach.

Not only are cockroaches nasty-looking critters, but they also are one of the dirtiest bugs and can trigger allergies and asthma attacks. How?

The particles from their shedding skin can cause allergic reactions in people who are sensitive to allergens like dust and similar substances. Not only do they cause allergic reactions, but there is evidence that children who were exposed to cockroach allergens from a young age can develop asthma during their preschool years (American Lung Association).

Most homes contain cockroach allergens without people even knowing it. In fact, according to the National Pest Management Association, 63% of homes in the United States contain cockroach allergens.

A few of the most common cockroach allergen symptoms include – coughing, skin rash, sinus infection, wheezing, and nasal congestion.

We don’t say all this to scare you, but to make you aware and prepared with the proper measures that it takes to protect your home and ultimately stay healthy.

Cockroaches & Asthma: Tips for Staying Healthy

  • Clean your house regularly – vacuum, wash kitchen floors, take out the trash, etc.

  • Manage moisture – Roaches love humidity, so make sure that you keep your house free of damp spaces.

  • Seal food containers – Keep all food sealed properly, so you eliminate any source of food that roaches may have access to.

  • Remove or limit carpeting – Carpeting is one of the worst things for individuals who are prone to allergies, so if possible, make sure that you limit the amount of carpet in your home.

  • Get rid of areas where allergens tend to collect – A few of these problem spots include beds, clothing, and carpet.
