DIY: Protect Your Garden Against Insects

DIY: Protect Your Garden Against Insects

If you want to protect your plants from pesky insects, there are several safe and natural methods you can try using things you may already have at home or can easily find at a store.

Remember to test these remedies on a small portion of the plant first to check for any adverse reactions. Additionally, rotate the types of remedies you use to prevent pests from building resistance. While these remedies are generally safe for plants and the environment, be cautious and avoid applying them during peak sunlight or excessively hot temperatures, as they might cause damage.

Neem Oil

Neem oil is a popular choice that is derived from the neem tree. It acts as a natural insecticide and can repel a wide range of pests. To use it, mix a few drops with water and spray it on your plants.

Garlic and Onion Spray

Another option is to make a garlic and onion spray. Simply crush bulbs of garlic and onion and steep them in water overnight. Strain the mixture and spray it on your plants. The strong odor of these ingredients is often enough to keep pests at bay.

Soap Spray

If you’re dealing with soft-bodied insects like aphids and mites, a soap spray may be effective. Mix a few drops of mild liquid soap with water and spray it on your plants. The soap suffocates these pests and can help protect your plants.

Oil Spray

For a different approach, you can try an oil spray. Combine a tablespoon of vegetable oil with a few drops of dish soap and water. Shake well and spray it on your plants. This suffocates and repels pests.

Hot Pepper Spray

A hot pepper spray can be a great way to deter insects. Blend hot peppers or pepper flakes with water, strain the mixture, and spray it on your plants. The spiciness of the peppers is often enough to keep insects away.

Companion Planting

Another option is to use companion planting. By planting certain herbs and flowers around your garden, you can help repel insects. For example, marigolds, basil, and mint are known to keep pests away.

Diatomaceous Earth

Consider using diatomaceous earth. This natural substance can be sprinkled around the base of plants and damages the exoskeletons of insects, leading to their demise. It’s important to use food-grade diatomaceous earth to ensure safety for pets and wildlife.

Beer Trap

If you’re dealing with slugs and snails, a beer trap might be the solution. Simply place shallow dishes filled with beer near the affected plants. The pests are attracted to the scent and will fall into the beer, where they will drown.

Vinegar Solution

One effective method is to mix equal parts of water and white vinegar and spray it on your plants. This vinegar solution not only repels pests, but it can also help fight off fungal diseases.

Coffee Grounds

Another solution is to sprinkle used coffee grounds around the base of your plants. The caffeine and acidity in the coffee repel pests and can even enrich the soil.
