Pests and Spring Allergies

Pests and Spring Allergies

It’s hard to believe, but spring is only a few weeks away. That means now is the perfect time to start preparing for everyone’s least favorite season: allergy season. Did you know that one of the major causes of allergies and asthma is pests?

That’s right, as if they couldn’t get any worse, pests can actually make you sneeze and have trouble breathing, even if you can’t see them.

Insects like cockroaches can contain allergen proteins in their droppings, saliva, skin sheddings, and other body parts. These things can cause nasty allergies and increase asthma symptoms, especially in children.

Typical allergies to cockroaches include:

  • Coughing
  • Nasal congestion
  • Skin rash
  • Wheezing
  • Ear infection
  • Sinus infection

In addition to cockroaches, you can also be allergic to rodents that may be taking shelter in your home. Hair, dander, urine, feces, and saliva of rodents such as mice and rats can cause allergic reactions just like dogs and cats can.

The best way to prevent against these pests and give you and your family the best chance against allergies this season? Keep a clean home!

Here are 8 tips to prevent pests in your home:

  1. Seal cracks and gaps so pests can’t get in
  2. Remove standing water in or around your home
  3. Vacuum at least once per week
  4. Seal and store food properly
  5. Clean kitchen floors, counters, and appliances daily
  6. Take out the trash daily
  7. Pay special attention to kitchens and bathrooms, especially underneath appliances and inside cabinets (remember: cockroaches love food droppings and moisture!)
  8. Inspect your attic (where rodents love to hide!)
